Tomato and Onion Chutney to go with Dosa or Idli

March 17, 2013

We all want something spicy to go with our favourite dosas and idlies. Well here it is – a tomato-onion chutney.

The thing about this chutney that I made is – of the two people who tasted it in my house one found it out of the world and the other found it tasteless.  (I don’t seem to be doing a very good job of selling my recipe 🙂 )

If it helps, I liked it 🙂  So here is the recipe-

Tomato- Onion Chutney

Tomato- Onion Chutney

Ingredients Required-

Onions-2 (chopped)

Tomatoes-4 (chopped)

Ginger- 1 cm piece

Garlic- 1 clove

Bengal Gram- 1 &1/2 tablespoon

Curry leaves- a few

Green chillies- 1

Red Chillies- 2

Mustard seeds- 1 tsp

Hing or Asafoetida – 1 pinch

Turmeric powder- 1/4th tsp

Red Chilli powder- 1/4th tsp

Vegetable oil/Mustard oil – 1 tbsp

Salt- as per taste

Take some oil in a pan. Temper it with asafoetida, curry leaves, one red chilli. Put the lentils, i.e. Bengal gram and fry till it turns a darker shade. Take it out and keep aside to cool down.

In the same pan add the onions and a bit of salt (salt helps to soften)  and fry them till they turn golden brown. Now put green chilli, ginger, garlic, turmeric and red chili powder one by one and keep stirring. After a minute (on low flame), add the tomatoes and cook for about 10 minutes (add a bit of water if needed).

Take it off the flame and let it cool down. Now add the fried bengal gram and onion-tomato mix together and make a paste.

Finally, heat 1 tsp of oil in another pan, put mustard seeds, red chilli, curry leaves  and stir till the seeds crackle. Thereafter put the tomato-onion paste.  Stir for about 2 minutes, test for salt. Take out of stove and let it cool. This can be had with dosas and idlies.
